Latinos Educando Juntos…First-Ever Bi-lingual Conference for early educators in Pa was huge success!

PHILADELPHIA, PA,
June 26, 2023 — Latinos Educando Juntos (LEJ) hosted its first conference on Saturday, June 17, at Esperanza College in Philadelphia to provide LatinX and Hispanic childcare providers, businesses, and teachers with professional development, resources, and valuable information in a bi-lingual format. Sponsored by First Up and Esperanza, all programs had interpreters and materials offered translations. All language barriers were removed. Approximately 100 people attended from Reading in
Berks County, Allentown in Lehigh County, and Philadelphia. Led by professional instructors, among the workshops available were Early Intervention Services, Business Practices, Advocacy, Family Partnerships, and many others with built-in opportunities for engagement.

The first and only conference of its kind, State Representative Danilo Burgos, head of the Hispanic Caucus in Harrisburg, attended and presented a Citation from the House of Representatives to LEJ Founder Damaris Alvarado-Rodriguez recognizing the organization for providing support and resources to early learning educators to help enrich the lives of black and brown children. He said, “Today you made history, bringing together so many people throughout the Commonwealth of PA who share a passion for children and attended this first-ever LEJ conference that broke barriers by being bi-lingual.”

This groundbreaking educational experience celebrated all attendees who left feeling a new strength in their potential to be leaders in their communities. Al- varado-Rodriguez is overwhelmed by the response to this first-ever event that brought hope and enlightenment to so many people. She said, “This was beyond all my

expectations. I am over- whelmed with joy for the impact we have made on so many people. I am very grateful for the support from First Up, Esperanza, our board, the community of childcare leaders and workers, and so many volunteers. Without them, it doesn’t happen. I always say… ‘Nada sobre nosotros sin nosotros.’ which means, ‘nothing about us, without us!’ And, this day, we did that – we broke down language barriers and helped many more people have a voice so they will not feel left out in the future.” She added, “And this ,…
