On Tuesday evening, December 28, it was announced that former NFL head coach and broadcast legend John Madden had passed away at the age of 85. While John Madden was undoubtedly one of the most iconic head coaches in the history of the National Football League, the former draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles was equally a great football broadcaster for CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox Sports.
Madden became the only sports broadcaster in TV history to be the top color analyst for all four networks. Inside the broadcast booth, Madden shared his remarkable personality with millions of football fans across the nation. He had the type of energy that always brought the TV screen to life.
But before Madden made his mark in the National Football League, the 6-foot-4 nose tackle was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958. The Eagles grabbed Madden in the 21st round of the 1958 NFL Draft. The Eagles had high hopes for the high-energy nose tackle. However, during the team’s training camp in 1959, the promising nose tackle had suffered a knee injury that would end his promising football career.
