Coming off his remarkable MVP caliber 2020-21 season, it seems as though 76ers Center Joel Embiid hasn’t missed a single step in 2022.
The Philadelphia 76ers were the 1st Seed in the Eastern Conference in 2020-21, backed by Joel Embiid’s 28.5 points (on 51% shooting) and 10.6 rebounds per game. Unfortunately for Joel, he placed 2nd in MVP voting, behind Denver Nuggets’ Center Nikola Jokic. That only motivated him to get better.
Almost halfway through the 2021-22 NBA season, Embiid is averaging 27 points (which makes him the 5th NBA season leader in scoring), 10.5 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, 1 steal, and a career-high 4.3 assists per game. From December 26th to January 12th, Embiid led the 76ers to a 7-1 stretch, truly showing how impactful he’s been. During that stretch, he’s scored at least 30 points in every game, joining Wilt Chamberlain and Allen Iverson as the only 76er players to score 30-plus points in 8 consecutive games. At 27 years old, Embiid is playing up to expectations, as well as remaining healthy. The only thing holding him back from winning MVP this season is the 76ers record. As of January 14th, the 76ers are the 5th seed in the Eastern Conference, behind basketball powerhouses, such as the Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Miami Heat. Nets’ Kevin Durant is the leading MVP candidate, as well as being the 1st NBA Season Leader in Scoring. Through the season, Durant has maintained his incredible production, averaging almost 30 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 6 assists per game.
