NORRISTOWN—Jeanne Sorg, Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds, wants to make all veterans aware of their rights in requesting copies of their military service records. There are companies online offering to provide service records, such as a DD214, for a fee. However, these documents can be requested for free through a number of different channels.Â
If you have recorded your discharge paperwork with the Recorder of Deeds office, you can request a copy for free by calling our office at 610-278-3289.
If you or a family member needs to obtain a new copy of discharge paperwork, the Veteran Affairs milConnect website (https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect) lets you request discharge paperwork, as well as performance reports, awards, decorations, security clearances and more, right from the website, all for free.
You can also request discharge paperwork by mail or fax by sending a request to the National Personnel Records Center or visiting your state or county Veterans agency.

Congresswoman Madeleine Dean’s Office can also obtain DD-214s, and other military records, on behalf of veterans and their families. There is no fee, and requests are flagged as “Congressional Requests” in the National Archive’s system – which often expedites the entire request. It is a very easy process – to get started, please contact Congresswoman Dean’s Military and Veteran Affairs Representative, Jim Bodor, at 215-277-9238.
“Don’t be duped into paying for your discharge paperwork,” said Jeanne Sorg, Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds. “These documents are free to request from Veterans Affairs and free to record with the Recorder of Deeds office. There is no need to hire an agency or pay exorbitant fees to request copies and record your discharge paperwork.”
Sorg encourages all Montgomery County veterans to record their discharge papers with the Recorder of Deeds office; a free service that safeguards their paperwork while also entitling veterans to discounts to more than 600 merchants throughout Montgomery County with the Veterans Discount ID card.
