Can you imagine coming home to the city where you were raised and where you spent the majority of your life, minus time away (while in college in Wisconsin) and then when you do come home, you receive a lot of scary warnings about all the crime in Philly and “please be safe,” warnings.
My first-born granddaughter graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cheyney University on May 7th, and there was no way in the world that I would have missed her graduation, even if I had to walk all the way from North Carolina to Cheyney, Pennsylvania. My husband and I made our plans, booked our round-trip flights, and made reservations at a hotel at 16th and Chestnut Street in Center City, Philadelphia.
Mind you! Both of my adult children have careers in law enforcement, so they clearly see and understand the crime scene in Philadelphia. Upon learning that we had booked a hotel in Center City, my son darn near passed out in disbelief. Boy, did he give me (in particular) a current history lesson on the crime rate in Philadelphia and more specifically, the crime rate in the Center City area. He really acted like he was frightened for us. He made us sound like two old senior citizens coming to town who had never been there before and knew nothing about how to get around in Philly.
