“What is your life? It is even a vapor, which appears for a little time,
And then vanishes away.” (James 4:14).
Amidst all the uncertainty about life, one thing is certain, and that is that life is short. An interesting Bible study is to make a survey of the metaphors the Bible uses about life. There are eighteen of them, and they all refer to the fact that life is short.
Job says, “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle.” And again, “My life is like the wind.” The psalmist compares our life to a fading flower or falling leaf. “As for man, his days are as grass: As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone: and the place thereof shall know it no more.”
The writer of Chronicles records for us the words of David: “Our days on earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.” Psalm 90:9 says, “We spend our years as a tale that is told.”
