Can you imagine being the head of a School District after a pandemic that saw children of all ages, including college students, being forced to go to school online from home because it wasn’t safe to be around other people you don’t live with, during the Coronavirus pandemic? I sure wouldn’t want it to be me. The new person to oversee Philly’s public schools has a humongous job ahead of them.
According to a news report on Fox News Network on March 26, 2022, school-age children continue to be impacted by learning loss from the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures, a new report shows.
Students fared worse academically during the second year of the pandemic compared to the first year, when students earned lower scores than they did prior to the pandemic. The trend suggests the impact of COVID-19 closures on student success continues to be felt, according to a study released a month ago, by education software company Renaissance Learning.
Then when you look at the public school district such as Philadelphia, where there were already many challenges facing students and educators, it really makes you wonder, what will it take to get all of our children back on track with their education?
Good leadership at the top will go a long way toward making for a turn-a-round in student success rates, I believe. I also know it takes good parents staying on their children about reading at home, getting all their homework done, and studying. For students who are having a hard time with certain subjects, parents need to do like I did when my children were in elementary school. They should identify an organization that offers free tutoring, low-cost tutorial services, or organizations that have after-school programs to help strengthen youth academically. These types of programs do exist. Parents just have to find them.
Meanwhile, a new Public Schools Superintendent has been named. He was named on Friday, April 1, and it was no “April Fool’s” joke.
The newly selected Superintendent for Philadelphia Public Schools is Tony B. Watlington. Mayor Jim Kenney led the six-month search for the replacement for Dr. William Hite. The most recent past superintendent of Philadelphia public schools.
