International Overdose Awareness Day

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On August 31, 2024, we observe International Overdose Awareness Day. As we prepare to memorialize those who have passed from an overdose, we also reflect on and acknowledge the grief of those left behind.
On August 31, 2019, the Sardella family lost their beloved son, Joey, to an accidental overdose. In 2020, the Sardella family first organized the annual Springfield cemetery walk in Joey’s honor. The family now partners with The Shevlin Family Foundation, a Delco public charity–that serves those affected by addiction. All are invited to join the community on August 31, 2024, at the Delco Overdose Awareness & Memorial Walk at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA. Gates open at 5:30 pm.
In 2023 alone, more than 107,000 Americans passed away due to drug-related overdoses (National Center for Health Statistics). In Pennsylvania, on average, 14 people die every day of an overdose (PA Department of Health). The effects of overdose do not discriminate. Regardless of zip code, race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, or social standing, overdose affects everyone from grieving families to first responders. Yet, many continue to live with the stigma associated with substance use disorders and accidental overdoses.
Several sponsorship opportunities will help with walk expenses and support community members in their early recovery. In addition, sponsors will have their names displayed on event banners and social media posts. Please consider sponsoring here.
On August 31, the gates of Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA, will open at 5:30 pm. After a series of introductions at 6:30, we will begin the one-mile trek down the cemetery’s center and back. The walk is completely free. Any tax-deductible donations will go toward The Shevlin Family Foundation’s Housing Scholarship and First Helps Programs, which directly support Delco residents on their recovery journey. Please attend, walk, share resources, start conversations, and donate.
Your presence alone sends the message to your community that you advocate for victims of overdose, their families, and all those in active addiction. Let’s take some time on International Overdose Awareness Day to honor the people we have lost, the loved ones we have left behind, and those who are working tirelessly to prevent more fatalities. It’s a moment to reflect and an opportunity to take action. We hope to see you at the Delco Overdose Awareness & Memorial Walk.
