PHILADELPHIA, PA, Friday, March 3, 2023— “I am deeply saddened and appalled at the recent acts of vandalism that occurred at Masjidullah. Acts of vandalism, especially against our religious centers, are abhorrent–and have no place in our communities and our country,” said Commissioner Sabir as he called for a show of solidarity and a commitment to religious freedoms, condemning property vandalism and destruction.
Imam Idris Abdul-Zahir and Commissioner Omar hosted a press conference on March 3, 2023. Representatives from across political, religious, and business spectrums and the community heeded the call and came to the Masjidullah, 7401 Limekiln Pike, to stand “United Against Hate.”
A large part of the conference focused on “religious education, peace, and love.” As we all know, many of today’s problems are the result of “differences” and a lack of understanding and respect for others. State Representative Jason Dawkins stated, “It is important that we get back to the principles of Islam. How do we educate? How do we reach back into our community to ensure they understand Islam and what this religion stands for?
Representative Chris Rabb, “This is what community looks like, looking at the representatives standing in Masjidullah. It’s not the stimulus; it’s the response. There’s always gonna be hate; it’s how you respond to it; that makes the difference.”
Sheriff Rochell Bilal shared, Islam is not about hate. It’s about peace. We are gathered here in unity to show that peace. No matter what religion you deal with or believe in–peace is always at the top of the board.
Representatives from EMGAGE PA, CAIR, the Philadelphia NAACP, and the Father’s Day Rally Committee also shared their solidarity with Masjidullah and denounced hate and threats against our communities.
Omar Sabir and Captain Richardson, 14th Police District, informed the press and members of community, that the person who defaced Masjidullah was apprehended.
In closing, Imam Idris Abdul-Zahir shared, “As leaders, we have to provide opportunities for people to know one another. There is a multi-faith neighbors network, and they have scheduled a series of meetings together to have discussions, ask questions, learn from one another, and work together to serve the community.”
