Sometimes the criminal justice system does work. Case in point, ex-police officer Kim Potter has been found guilty in the fatal shooting of African American Daunte Wright. Potter is the former Brooklyn Center, Minnesota police officer who fatally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright earlier this year after shouting “Taser.” She was found guilty of first-degree and second-degree charges of manslaughter on December 23, 2021.
On April 20, 2021, we witnessed another white cop be punished for killing a Black man. Derek Michael Chauvin is a former police officer who was convicted of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Chauvin was a member of the MPD from 2001 to 2020 and graduated from Metropolitan State University in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement.
