Philadelphia, PA – On November 14, 2022, Temple University held a grand opening of the Center for Anti-Racism, a bold and integral research initiative created to provide broad evidence-based research on racism and how to strategically combat, Racism in America.
Some of the VIPs and guest speakers at the event included: Dr. Jason Wingard – President, Temple University; State Senator Sharif Street; State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta; Dr. Valerie I. Harrison, Executive Vice President, Temple University; Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Harrity; Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, nationally renowned Africology Professor, Temple University; Richard Englert, Chancellor, Temple University; Gregory N. Mandel, Provost, Temple University; Timothy Welbeck, Director of Center for Anti-Racism, Temple University, and others. It was a capacity packed room of at least 100 guests.
During grand opening remarks, it was mentioned that State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta and State Senator Sharif Street were key principals involved in securing the $1.3 million grant awarded to Temple University to initiate construction of the Center for Anti-racism Research. Kenyatta is a 2012 graduate of Temple University’s Klein School of Communications.
The Center for Anti-racism Research came into fruition from the collaborative input of Dr. Valerie I. Harrison, Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, State Senator Street and State Representative Kenyatta.
“The facility encourages researchers to come together, to educate the public about racial inequity and injustice,” reported CBS 3/Eyewitness News. The Director of the Center for Anti-Racism is Timothy Welbeck. Welbeck is no stranger to Temple University. He’s an Assistant Professor in the Department of Africology and African American Studies and is a Civil Rights Attorney by trade; he earned his Juris Doctorate from Villanova University School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College.
