Good Deeds

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As SCOOP Readers are enjoying reading the SCOOP this week, Democrats are kicking off their National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. The Republicans hosted their Convention five weeks ago in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

All attention this week, however, will be on Chi-Town, Tuesday night, former President Barack Obama will address the Democratic National Convention (DNC). He will be the main keynote speaker Tuesday night.

Thursday evening, August 22, will be Vice President Kamala Harris’ big night as she accepts the DNC nomination to be the Presidential candidate to take on former President Donald Trump, come Tuesday, November 5, General Election Day. The president and First Lady Jill Biden (political pundits predict) will be given extended tributes over the week for all their service to the nation. This is a far different scenario than what our nation had expected to happen at the DNC. However, after the debate in June between President Biden and former President Trump, the writing was on the wall that President Biden needed to take himself out of the race for reelection. Biden’s speech at the convention will likely be covered as the president’s first major step toward establishing his legacy, but also for what he says about Harris. There is some hint that there will be some kind of a “pass the torch” moment to Vice President Kamala Harris.

I had to start my column billboarding just a bit about the DNC. This will be a historic week because this will be the first time ever (in American history) that we will witness a woman officially become a nominee for President of the United States This is history, live and in living color.

Which brings me to my next point. Good Civic Deeds.
There are so many ways in which we can all do something positive. Whether you are rich or financially challenged, there are things you can do, for example, on a civic level, to encourage voter participation.

Mount Carmel Baptist Church at 5732 Race Street in West Philadelphia on Sunday, August 17, opened the Fellowship Hall of their church for a nonpartisan postcard writing effort to try and get more West Philadelphia registered voters to actually vote.
