Hello, my faithful readers! By now, you know I have moved to the ATL to have spine surgery. As I wait for my insurance to kick in, I am spending most of my time catching up on series and movies released on Netflix, Xumo, Hulu, and more. But what surprised me was one day as I was looking at the news was that I saw Lori Wilson and Dave Huddleston, both former anchors of Philadelphia.
Lori Wilson joined the Channel 2 Action News family in January 2017. She anchors Channel 2 Action News at 6 and 11 on weekend evenings. Lori is thrilled to be back on air in Atlanta for a second time. She has worked in four other television markets. Before joining WSB-TV, Lori spent 3 1⁄2 years working for WISH-TV in her hometown of Indianapolis. Before that, she spent 7 1⁄2 years at WCAU in Philadelphia, where she held several positions including, anchor, reporter, and host of the 10! Show.
While at WCAU, Lori reported live from the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, anchored coverage of Hurricane Sandy, and field anchored everything from station coverage of NBC’s Education Nation to the Phillies home opener. Before WCAU, Lori created an online magazine for young Black women. She is a children’s book author, a member of NABJ, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and The Indianapolis Chapter of The Links, Inc. Lori is a board member for IDEA, in Camden, New Jersey, and The Christamore House and twice a week you’ll find her in church. Lori and her husband live in the Atlanta metro area.
Dave Huddleston arrived at WSB-TV in January 2012, and it has been non-stop ever since. He has covered most of the major stories that impact the community. He had a significant role reporting on national historical events, including the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama, and the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
A native of Tacoma, Washington, Dave has worked in several news markets, including Seattle, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, before making Atlanta his home.
I am glad Philly was a part of their experience and success.
On another note…We have been anticipating the new Mike Tyson movie in which Jamie Foxx will be playing the famous fighter. But what you didn’t know is, Jamie was working on a comedy sitcom that was released a couple of weeks ago and has already been picked up for another season. Well, what do you expect? When you stir up a cast that includes Jamie Foxx, David Allan Grier, and Jackee, you get a comedy situation, and that’s the recipe for success..and the new sitcom I am talking about is “Dad Stop Embarrassing Me,” starring Foxx, Grier, and Kyla-Drew playing his daughter, Sasha.
Here is some background…A single dad and cosmetics brand owner figures out fatherhood on the fly when his strong-minded teen daughter moves in with him.
“Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!” show stars Foxx as Brian Dixon, a father who gets custody of his daughter, Sasha (Kyla-Drew), and the two don’t exactly see eye-to-eye. The series brings together old-school aesthetics with modern sensibilities, such as having an episode where Sasha admits to her father that she doesn’t believe in God.
Shortly after the show’s debut, it cracked into Netflix’s Top 10. Combined with Foxx’s natural charisma and popularity, it certainly seems like this series could have some longevity. Netflix hasn’t officially renewed it, but the word is…they are already talking about season 2.
So far, so good…If you haven’t seen the show there is plenty you are missing. From the storyline to the character he plays… it’s a real treat! Foxx reaches back to his “In Living Color” roots by taking on all sorts of wacky characters, including Reverend Sweet Tee, Rusty, and Cadillac Calvin.
Celebrated actor and director, Robert X. Golphin, a Philadelphia native, has just released his new novella, “Cold Night In A Warm Season.”
After a devastating loss, a graduate student’s relationships and the road to becoming a successful screenwriter are thrown into jeopardy. The unexpected turmoil forces him to reckon with his fear of self-mortality and the mortality of those around him. His deep-seated insecurities, and the power of people’s words (and his own), will rock him to his core.
“Cold Night In A Warm Season” centers on the arts and mental health, and its release coincides with National Minority Health Month and Stress Awareness Month. The story probes self-identity, sparring with destiny, wrestling with internal curveballs and external obstacles, facing detractors, owning your environment, discovering where your heart lies, and determining what matters most in life.
“This book is for dreamers,” said Golphin. “It’s for anyone who’s ever felt like no one believed in them. It’s also for people who don’t realize just how big they can dream. I hope that readers will be inspired in a multitude of ways, be bold and creative on their own, and also stimulate and cultivate others.”
Golphin’s TV and Film acting credits include The Great Debaters, Underground Kings, and HBO’s The Wire. He also directed the feature film Freshman Friday (starring NAACP Theater Award Winner Jerrel O’Neal and recording artist Brian McKnight, Jr.), now streaming on Amazon Prime.
The trailer for “Cold Night In A Warm “ can be viewed online at https://youtu.be/Yc1D_B9V4g4. The book, in paperback or digital, is available now at Amazon.com.
