Garveyism and the Legacy of the UNIA-ACL Int’l Headquarters

Reading Time: < 1 minute

“Garveyism is not only a theoretical philosophy, but a working idealism, geared to the crying needs of an entire race, many millions of whom were dispersed by slavery to the United States, the West Indies, Europe, Canada, and as far as South America. In time chattel slavery was abolished, but these dejected and rejected people of the earth never had a unifying force; in fact, we were propagandized to believe that we had no common cause. All around the globe, Black people were taught to stigmatize other. The divide and rule methods wrought havoc within our race. Then came the awakening of Marcus Garvey-“UP YOU MIGHTY RACE!” He gave his people a new set of values in a world where race is the criterion of human standards and the white race considered themselves superior men. He gave Black people new dimensions and new horizons that transcended national boundaries, languages, and religion.”

Amy Jacques Garvey 1972

It truly takes a village to raise a child. But within that village, there must be institutions in place to foster the history, culture, principles, practices, values, virtues, and proud legacy of that people. Within that village, there must be places that reinforce, reproduce and refine the best of itself and those who need uplifting and by doing so, it passes on to each generation its accumulated knowledge, wisdom, compassion skills, and leadership necessary to develop, maintain and thrive–to secure a respected, protected and glorious future for those yet unborn.
