The Recording Academy has announced its 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award honorees, and among the esteemed recipients is gospel icon Dr. Bobby Jones, recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to gospel music. Sharing this prestigious honor with luminaries such as Prince, Frankie Beverly, The Clash, and Taj Mahal, Dr. Jones’ legacy is celebrated for its profound impact on music and culture.

Dr. Bobby Jones is best known for his television show, Bobby Jones Gospel, and for his monumental achievements as a gospel vocalist as well as a radio personality. His extensive career began in 1976 with the debut of Nashville Gospel on WSM-TV. Building on this success, he launched Bobby Jones Gospel in 1980 on Black Entertainment Television (BET)–a series that ran for over three decades, making history as the longest-running original series on cable television.
Born and raised in Tennessee, Dr. Jones earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee State University and later obtained his Doctor of Education degree from Vanderbilt University. His influence extends beyond music. In 2006, he was appointed Ambassador of the Commonwealth of Dominica. As a musician, he has toured extensively with groups such as New Life and the Nashville Super Choir, amassing a discography of 14 albums and receiving more than 1,500 awards, including a GRAMMY for Best Soul Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group for “I’m So Glad I’m Standing Here Today.”
The 2025 Special Merit Awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, celebrating Dr. Jones and his fellow honorees for their unparalleled contributions to the arts.
