Diabetes Luncheon

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Chester City Bureau of Health held its Annual Diabetes Luncheon, in the Community Room at City Hall, on Wednesday, June 28th.

Lower-limb amputations (LLA), which is surgery to remove a toe, foot, or leg, are increasing in the US, and 80% are a result of complications from diabetes.

The good news is that most diabetes-related hospitalizations can be prevented with lifestyle changes, blood sugar management, regular foot checks, and prompt wound care when needed.

According to the CDC, approximately 13% of adults in the United States live with diabetes, and another.2.8% live with undiagnosed diabetes. This amounts to roughly 15 percent or 41.5 million adults who could benefit being aware of diabetic amputee statistics.

Every year in the United States, about 73,000 amputations of lower limbs not related to trauma are performed on people with diabetes.

Recognizing the disparities in treatment, particularly in underserved communities, the City of Chester collaborates with various community stakeholders to hold this event every year to keep the residents abreast of the dangers and advances in care for the diabetic population of the city. This year the city collaborated with the Black Equity Coalition, Save Your Soles, Neumann University, CEP Solutions, and Woodlyn Pharmacy.

Activities included Covid-19 vaccines, boosters and information, flu and shingles vaccines, foot examinations, information on diabetic meal preparation, blood pressure screenings, free giveaways and more.
