Councilmember Gilmore Richardson’s summer minor curfew law now in effect

Reading Time: < 1 minute

PHILADELPHIA, Thursday, July 7, 2022 – Today, Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson’s summer minor curfew bill went into effect. Mayor Kenney signed the bill and submitted it back to the Chief Clerk of City Council on Wednesday. The bill modifies the minor curfew for teens 16 and older from midnight to ten p.m. until September 29, 2022.

“We are in a state of emergency in the City of Philadelphia, and no one is suffering more than our young people,” said Councilmember Gilmore Richardson (At-Large). “Young people are getting caught up in dangerous situations, and we cannot continue to go on like this,” said Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson (At-Large). “There have already been 92 children under 18 shot this year. We are besieged in our communities, and as leaders, we must do everything we can to keep our young people safe.”

“Residents are asking us to do more, and the updated curfew will help keep more young people safe. We already have two Community Evening Resource Centers up and running, and two more should be open by August. These are safe spaces we have created for young people to connect with mentorship, career training, homework help, and more. We have to use every tool in our toolbox to protect our young people during the most violent time of the year.”

Last year, Councilmember Gilmore Richardson secured millions of dollars to open Community Evening Resource Centers, community-based safe spaces for young people open every day from 7pm to 2am.

Councilmember Gilmore Richardson has been working closely with the Philadelphia Department of Human Services and the Philadelphia Police Department to develop the new curfew requirements and establish community-based resource centers in light of the gun violence epidemic in the City of Philadelphia.
