The rumors and talk about whether or not Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke would run for re-election again have been out there for months–to tell the truth. Some folk try to act like all this just came about in the last few weeks, but I do not believe that to be so. As someone who has covered City Hall in the past, for years, as part of one of my regular beats, and even after I didn’t have that assignment anymore, as a civic-minded person, I always observe politics and pay attention. Saying that I acknowledge I have observed, reported on, and covered Council President Darrell Clarke many times over the years.
If one didn’t know that this man is President of Philadelphia City Council, one of the most powerful city councils in the nation, one might think he was simply a kind businessman who works somewhere in Center City Philadelphia; if you encountered Darrell Clarke on the street. That’s his demeanor to me. He’s not loud and overbearing, beating on his chest or chasing after the media every two seconds trying to get on TV and radio. He does his job–and to me, he’s not seeking glory for being a public servant. He just does what he does.
