Commitment, Honor, Love, and Lives Well Lived

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I find it difficult, at times, to convey some stories given the way society operates today, with everyone so intent on making a name for themselves, being noticed, getting likes on social media platforms, and with the need to live out loud. This story I’m about to share with you has none of the components above, and that’s what has compelled me to tell you about the extraordinary Dolores and John Shelton, a couple deeply rooted in the city and culture of Chester and, above all, endlessly connected to its people.

The Sheltons’ are lifelong residents of the City of Chester, having been reared, educated, worked, and built careers in the city as they advocated for its residents together as part of the Civil Rights Movement on the International, National, and Philadelphia Boards of OIC, active in The Chester branch of the NAACP and other organizations. Whatever they became active in or whatever cause they supported, they did it together.

On June 5, 2024, The Sheltons celebrated 75 years of marriage. Being a happily divorced person, it’s difficult for me to phantom being with any one individual for a lifetime, but this couple has succeeded at it and in spectacular fashion.

John, employed by Luke Motors, a singer in a gospel music group, and Delores, a student at Cheney University and a community activist, were introduced by John’s best friend–it was love at first sight. Marrying five days after her college graduation, the Sheltons’ have been together ever since. Delores went on to become an educator in the Chester Upland School District for 37 years, and John went on to become an entrepreneur–but both never gave up on each other or serving their community amid it all raising two sons.

Mrs. Shelton remembered the eight trips she and her husband John took to Africa together. When asked what was so special about the African trips, Shelton stated, “From the minute my feet touched the ground, in that country, it was magical…you could feel the energy coursing right up through your feet into your entire being. It was even more special since it was John and I together making these journeys.”

The Sheltons are icons in the City of Chester. They’ve counseled, mentored, tutored, and aided many a young men, women, and families throughout the city and beyond. If I could describe the Shelton’s and their contributions to the Chester community, society at large, and the world around them, it would be Meliorism. They’re kind, generous, thoughtful people with hearts for humanity and a penchant for doing what’s right for all.

Happy Anniversary, Mr. & Mrs. Shelton. Many Happy Returns!
