Coded by Kids Brings AMC’s “The Walking Dead” to Students with “Apocalyptech” Virtual Design Challenge

Reading Time: 2 minutes

[PHILADELPHIA, PA– February 21, 2022] – Families may soon find the zombies of the hit show “The Walking Dead” lurking inside their homes as Coded by Kids, in partnership with AMC, launches a new virtual challenge known as “Apocalyptech” for high school and college students.

Beginning Feb. 21 and continuing through late-March, Apocalyptech will present a series of competitive challenges to entrepreneurial and creative youth looking to build their problem solving and design thinking skills. Participants will use videos from “Walking Dead” actress Laura Ridloff and the show’s writers to guide them through challenges testing their problem-solving skills. On March 28th, Apocalyptech  challenge winners will be announced during a virtual event.

“Apocalyptech is another way that we’re showing kids how tech can enrich their lives,” said Sylvester Mobley, Coded by Kids founder and CEO. “Our goal is to provide students with extracurricular programming that introduces them to an exciting, competitive and inclusive tech environment that gives underrepresented students a springboard into careers in tech.”

“There’s nothing like the creativity that’s sparked from watching and engaging with your favorite shows and films, so what better way to connect entertainment and opportunities for students to learn about technology than with the highest rated series in cable history, ‘The Walking Dead,’” said Aisha Thomas-Petit, AMC Networks’ Chief Diversity & People Officer. “As a Philadelphia native, I’m thrilled AMC Networks is partnering with Coded by Kids and Comcast NBCUniversal to get more kids interested in leadership and technology.”

The latest addition to Coded by Kids’ programs, Apocalyptech is part of the organization’s 1Philadelphia initiative, which aims to make Philadelphia the capital for equitable tech and innovation. The Philadelphia Eagles, Bank of America, Comcast NBCUniversal, and the Lenfest Foundation have all partnered with Coded by Kids for 1Philadelphia to create a culture shift and change the way Black Philadelphians view tech and innovation. To do this, the organization is bringing some of the most dynamic voices in entertainment, sports and beyond to show kids what the world of tech can offer them.
