CIVICS 101

We’ve got to know our history and we need to understand what our role is, as American citizens. If you know your history, you will know that Black people were Republicans, in terms of a political party of choice, before they got involved in other political parties. In the year 2022, the Democratic party has far more registered African Americans than the Republican party does, but according to some Republican leaders I interviewed this week, they have a plan to attract Blacks to come back into the fold. 

The Republican Party was founded in 1854. The party promoted African-American equality for its first twenty years of being in existence. Abraham Lincoln and the “Radical Republicans” in Congress fought to end slavery and give black men full citizenship. 

But as early as 1876 – Republican leaders began to abandon Black Americans. In that year’s presidential election, Ohio Republican Rutherford B. Hayes agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South in exchange for southern Democratic support. Democrats seized power in the South, and that’s when legalized segregation began.
