CIVICS 101

Reading Time: < 1 minute

We’ve covered this subject before in this Civics 101 column. But in light of the first anniversary of the rioting and insurrection on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, I think this subject is worth revisiting.

The rioting, defaming certain of our elected officials and defaming the historic capitol building itself, breaking glass windows (and crawling in like insects and rodents) to attempt to take over the United States Government and declare Donald Trump King (it seemed to me), is what happened a year ago in our nation’s capital was an insurrection. It was not a polite protest or a respectful gathering. That’s hogwash. It was an all-out free-for-all brawl with police and anyone else who appeared to look like they were in authority. I say, “call a spade a spade.” However, there are more “fancy” terminologies to use for bad behavior, such as what we saw by diehard Donald Trump supporters a year ago. It’s called an insurrection.

Article I, Section 8 There is no language in the Constitution advocating armed insurrection. In fact, the Constitution lays out the polar opposite case. The Militia is supposed to suppress insurrections against the state, not start them.
