Civics 101

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I don’t know about you, but to me–it almost doesn’t even feel like it’s near election time. Other than a few candidates who I see advertising on local TV for statewide races and, of course, the presidential campaign spots we see, it’s been too quiet in my humble opinion. What are the candidates waiting for? Christmas? Trust me, I review what the costs are for advertising on local radio, print media, and cable TV. That’s an exercise I do at least twice a year every year. And I’m telling you, cable TV campaign spots are still very affordable, and for the life of me–I cannot understand why so many candidates chose not to advertise at all. I know way too many candidates who don’t purchase time anywhere. They depend on social media handouts and their website to tell their stories. The problem with that is that everyone is not on social media, and everyone doesn’t necessarily look at websites for political candidates.

Once you turn the age of 18, it is your civic duty to register to vote and then to vote on election day, or if you sign up for it, to vote by mail before election day. How easy is that? We have a primary election coming up in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The polls open at 7 am and remain open until 8 pm. Unless you are totally living in a fog, you should know that this is a presidential election year. No way in the world, should voters take any election lightly, and definitely not a presidential election. Aside from candidates running for president, there are some other names on the ballot we need to consider voting for as well, for a number of political offices.

U.S. Senators have to run for election this year. In Pennsylvania, Democratic Senator Bob Casey has no Democratic challenger in the Primary. However we already know that come November of 2024, Casey will face off against Republican Dave McCormick.

For Attorney General in Pennsylvania, we have five Democrats running to be the nominee to face off against a Republican challenger in the general election in the Fall. There are also two Republicans running against each other to be the Republican nominee for PA State Attorney General. The Democrats running for PA State Attorney General are Jack Stollisteimer, Eugene DePasquale, Joe Khan, Keir Bradford Grey, and Jared Solomon. On the Republican side, the two PA State Attorney General candidates facing off against each other come April 23 are Dave Sunday and Craig Williams.

For State Treasurer, two Democrats are vying for the nomination on April 23. They are Ryan Bizzarro and Erin McClelland. On the Republican side, Stacy Garrity is running.

There’s also a ballot question we all need to vote on for those of us who live and vote in Philadelphia. Here’s the Ballot Question: Should the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter be amended to require the City to provide for the indemnification and defense of registered community organizations in connection with claims made against them arising directly out of their lawful participation in the City’s zoning variance process?
