This is a friendly reminder that we have a General Election coming up on Tuesday, November 8th, across the nation. Like all elections, this one is critical too. In Pennsylvania, for example, voters have to decide who the next Governor of the state will be and who the next Lt. Governor will be. Voters have to decide who their U.S. Senator will be from the Keystone state, who their Congress persons will be, and who their State Representatives will be. Voters that live in even-numbered districts also have to vote for state senators.
In reference to the PA U.S. Senate race, Senator Bob Casey does not have to run for reelection this year. The PA senate seat in question is the one being vacated by Senator Pat Toomey, who has decided to retire after the end of this year.
Whenever I think about “Civics” and try to share information about the importance of civics, one of the first things that always comes to my mind is the civic duty all adults have, age 18 and older, to register to vote and then vote twice a year, once during the primary election every Spring, and once during the general election which is always held the second Tuesday of the month of November. Do you want to call yourself grown? In my mind, one of the things grown people do is VOTE.
Some days I feel like I’m “babying” our SCOOP readers and not giving you enough credit for being as highly intelligent as you are. So today, I’m not giving out a lot of websites and phone numbers to tell you where to go to get voter information. I know our SCOOP Readers are very savvy and very politically astute. You know how to order an Uber when you need one, Uber Eats when you want to, movies online, and all things AMAZON. That’s why I know we can Google information on how to register to vote online, who the candidates are that are running, etc.
Ok. Ok. I’ll give you one thing: One of the phone numbers I know by heart for the Philadelphia City Commissioner’s Office. They can tell you everything you need to know about voting in the upcoming November 8th election–if you don’t have internet accessibility. Call 215-686-3462.
Now down to the other part of what I want to focus on in this Civics 101 column. I want to talk about the fact that really and truly in America, no one is above the law, not even Donald Trump. The question is, when will he get it through his head?
