City of Chester honors School Crossing Guards

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Being a Crossing Guard is definitely a labor of love and demands a level of commitment that few aspire to.

Loving children is simply not sufficient– most people love children. A job like this requires patience, kindness, understanding, and above all the ability to relate to all people, adults and children alike. It is not a position for the faint of heart and should not be taken lightly. Having to contend with changing weather conditions, misbehaving or ill-mannered children, irate and, at times, angry adults, and distracted inconsiderate drivers adds additional stress to the job of helping a child across a busy thoroughfare safely.

On Friday, November 17, 2023, Crossing Guard Administrator Beverly L. Harris partnered with CUSD Climate Manager Darren Laws to honor crossing guards in the City of Chester. One unidentified crossing guard commented, “I’ve never received an honor of any kind. I’m so proud.”

The intimate luncheon was held in the community room at City Hall. Each crossing guard received a gift bag and a certificate of appreciation and enjoyed lunch and fellowship with peers.

Linda Mary Johnson has spent years in service as a crossing guard, following a 15-year career as an LPN at Crozier. Johnson shared, “I love children; and I believe in treating them right. I enjoy the work.” Speaking with Johnson, it’s easy to understand why being a crossing guard is calling for special men and women.

The history behind the term ‘School Crossing Guard Appreciation’

National School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is celebrated on the 3rd Tuesday of February.

In 1896, the concept of school crossing guards was introduced in the United Kingdom. Concerned with the safety of children going to and from school, the Metropolitan Police appointed the first group of adults to help children cross busy streets. This marked the humble beginnings of the school crossing guard.

Formal recognition of school crossing guard

In the 1920s, the role of crossing guards became more formalized. Various countries, including the United States, started to establish laws and regulations to ensure the safety of children at pedestrian crossings. School crossing guards, often referred to as lollipop men and women due to the lollipop-shaped stop signs they carried, began to gain recognition for their important role in safeguarding young students.

The first school crossing guard program was implemented in Omaha, Nebraska in 1923. It was one small step for a crossing guard, one giant leap for pedestrian child safety!
