Tuesday was the first day of Ramadan, April 13, 2021, and Tuesday evening before sunset and time to break “fast” and participate in Iftar, Senator Sharif Street gathered with Philabundance and city officials to kick-off the Driving Hunger Away during Ramadan initiative.
Senator Street was joined by Mayor Jim Kenny, Council President Darrell Clarke, Rep. Joanna McClinton, Rep. Amen Brown, Commissioner Omar Sabir and Driving Hunger Away sponsors for the first distribution of the 30-day food drive during Ramadan, which will feed 6000 people.
The Driving Hunger Away During Ramadan initiative will feed 200 people a day at community spaces throughout Philadelphia for 30 days from the beginning of Ramadan on April 13 to May 12. Pandemic-related unemployment has been disproportionately higher among low-income communities. Food insecurity in the Philadelphia region rose sharply due to the pandemic, with many of Philabundance’s agencies reporting a 60 percent increase in the number of clients they serve.
Other key sponsors for this initiative include Shoprite Owned & Operated by the Brown’s Family, Keystone First, Philadelphia Ramadan & Eid Fund, Aetna, Dedicated Senior Medical Center, and Temple University Office of Community Affairs.
Participants may contact Senator Street’s District office at 215-227-6161 or visit www.senatorsharifstreet.com/register to pre-register at any of the 30 sites.
