City Council Report

Reading Time: 2 minutes

City Council Meeting May 16, 2024
This week’s Council Meeting had some very weighty issues that were of concern to the many citizens who showed up to voice their opinions.

Privilege Resolution Introduced by Councilmember Mark Squilla on behalf of Council President Kenyatta Johnson, honoring Dexter Resta on his acceptance of a full scholarship to Yale University.

Again this week, the Council paid homage to the youngest citizens of Philadelphia, starting with Dexter Resta, who was accepted to Yale University on a full scholarship. Raised by a single mother battling cancer, along with his four siblings, Resta never lost his determination to achieve his academic goals, particularly in math and science. His stellar academics earned him scholarship offers to many prestigious universities. He chose Yale, where he plans a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Economics. The plan is to further develop his math and science skills, with the end goal of working for NASA.

“It’s not every day that we get an opportunity to brag about the young people in the City of Philadelphia, especially when they’ve accomplished something that is historic in nature. When you know Philadelphia is a school of EDS meds and beds, we take a lot of pride in our education system, and as Chair of the Education Committee, it’s always an honor when we put ourselves in a position to recognize a young person for accomplishing something that young people don’t necessarily accomplish every single day,” said Councilmember Isaiah Thomas.

Resta commented, “I would like to thank my mom for always being my superhero, best friend, mentor, for sacrificing your life to raise me and my four siblings alone, for keeping food on the table, a roof over our heads and for being proud of me even when I had nothing to be proud of.”
