City Council May 2, 2024
City Council didn’t have a lot to unpack this week, but a few of the major takeaways were:
Sigma Phi PHI Fraternity, Inc.
Councilmember Nina Ahmad introduced a Resolution honoring the founding of Sigma Phi PHI Fraternity, Inc., on their 120th anniversary. The fraternity was founded in Philadelphia on May 15, 1904.
“It’s my honor and privilege to celebrate Sigma Phi PHI on their 120th anniversary. I wanted our city to see this array of accomplished Black men who’ve persevered and shown resilience over the years to make sure that they’ve broken through all these barriers. We have mayors, doctors, lawyers, a presidentially appointed, world-renown economist. We need our city to see this. We need this glory. We need a celebration of all the work that has gone in. It’s not been easy, and it’s still not easy, but we need to get encouraged by these folks who’ve presented themselves in service to humanity,” said Ahmad.
Members of this fraternity are part of the annals of Philadelphia history, boasting over 5,000 members to date and establishing the Mercy Douglas Hospital, which offered care and compassion during the segregated periods of healthcare in America.
It should be noted that former Councilmember Wilson Goode Jr. and the first African American Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, W. Wilson Goode, Sr., were in Council Chambers for the presentation of the Resolution.
Kensington Caucus Resolution
Councilmember Quetcy Lozada, Chair of the Special Committee on Kensington, introduced a resolution calling for the Controller to conduct a performance audit on all allocations and funding distributed by the city in the Kensington neighborhood and examine the policies and procedures of the recipients.
