Councilmember Jeffrey J. Young (5th District) presented a Resolution naming Master Street between Broad Street and Carlisle Erika Alexander Way:
Philadelphia City Council is infamous for proclamation and street renaming. I find most to be ho-hum, run of the mill… part of the job, recognizing the contributions of high-profile individuals, organizations, and everyday average citizens for the good of our city, nation, and the world. This particular resolution struck a chord with me.
There’s a common saying people are fond of spouting off that goes–“Folks don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk.” This is true of many to a certain extent. However, with Alexander, this phrase definitely doesn’t adequately describe who she is or what she’s accomplished (and not just in the Hollywood realm).
When speaking of Alexander, this iconic should be, “She doesn’t just walk it or talk it; She lives it.” Philadelphians should consider this a high-profile watershed moment for our city. I’ve never been a fan of a celebrity, and I can’t say that I’ve ever watched “Living Single” because I’m not a fan of comedy, as I have little to no sense of humor–but I am most impressed by Alexander’s work in spaces outside of the entertainment industry.
A graduate of Philadelphia High School for Girls, Alexander has extensive film and television credits, co-authored several comics and graphic novels, has directorial credits, and co-founded Color Farm Media, a company focused on bringing diverse and underrepresented stories to the big screen. The company released the Award-winning documentary John Lewis Good Trouble, detailing the journey of the late Congressman.
Said Alexander, “I’m humbled yet thrilled by this recognition from Philadelphia, a city that stands for freedom, independence, and the power of a new future by embracing a government made by and for the people. I’m a storyteller, and storytelling is fundamental to how we see ourselves in the world. We’re a storytelling chain all the time, and we ignore it to our detriment. My mentor, Reverend William Barber of Poor People’s Campaign, calls this period that we’re in the Third Reconstruction, and if that’s true, then it’s time to push beyond the boundaries that perpetuate White Supremacy and tribalism to tell a better story and a greater truth for a lot of people.”
