Chester Safe Summer

Summer 2023 is upon us, and officials in Chester are int on keeping everyone safe. Thursday, June 22nd, The Chester Chaplains Corps. in coordination with Holcomb Behavioral Health, funded by Delaware County Department of Human Services, Division of Drug and Alcohol, kicked off its 3rd Annual Chester Safe Summer.

The period of 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day is referred to as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” for teens in the United States. This is because 9 of the 10 deadliest days for teenagers typically fall within this timeframe. In fact, 700 people die each summer in the U.S. in motor vehicle accidents involving teenagers, according to AAA.

Over one million children went to ERs between June and August last summer due to injuries from summer- time products. Compared to the previous summer of 2021, there was a 14% increase in children’s ER visits in 2022.

The five summertime items most likely to send children to the ER are swimming equipment and pools, bikes, trampolines, and playground climbing equipment like monkey bars.

Between 2021 and 2022, injuries from diving or diving boards increased a staggering 72%, and swimming pool slide injuries rose 49%.

Between 2021 and 2022, children’s injuries from camping equipment, flying disks, treehouses, diving boards, and lighter fluids increased significantly.
