Chester NAACP 2023 Annual Awards & Scholarship Banquet

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Following three years of not being able to gather for a celebration due to the pandemic, the Chester Branch of the NAACP held its 2023 Annual Awards & Scholarship Banquet on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Ballroom at the Phoenix in Boothwyn, PA.
Much has changed in the three years since NAACP last held this event. It’s evident that the work of the NAACP is more vital than ever considering the attempt to overthrow our democracy, voter suppression, the recent decisions of our Supreme Court concerning Roe v. Wade and Affirmative Action, and police beatings, shootings, and violation of civil rights.
According to Darrell Jones, President of the Chester Branch of the NAACP, “After a three-year hiatus, this event was a way to put “the pieces back,” celebrating the achievements of local community leaders, students, and residents whose work closely aligned with the organization’s mission.”
Congratulations to all the youth Scholarship recipients. The Chester Monthly Meeting of Religious Society of Friends Award recipients were Elizabeth Laseinde and Alayna Guy. Chester High School Kiwanis Key Club and Cora Lee Dixon Youth Award recipient Yolanda T. Baker will attend Eastern University to pursue a degree in Nursing, Gwendolyn J. Foster Youth Award recipient Mariam Koita will attend Penn State University, Delores R. Shelton Youth Award recipient Gabrielle R.
