Chester Branch of NAACP celebrates Black History Month

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Saturday, February 18th, the City of Chester hosted the local chapter of the NAACP’s Black History Month Celebration in the City Hall Community Room. The well-attended event focused (not only) on long-known accomplishments of African-American Americans; but on the city’s lesser-known historical facts.

With outside entities usurping and leveraging our history and the monetization of Black History Month, it is more important than ever to recognize and celebrate all those people, events, and things that make Black history the history of America.

The Chester Branch of the NAACP celebrated Black History Month in spectacular fashion with a program titled, ‘I Am Chester. I Have A Dream.’ The well-attended event featured local small businesses, allowing them an opportunity to showcase their wares. Vendors showed costume jewelry, handbags, skin care products, inspirational journals, and more. One of the most iconic displays was that of Chester native Twyla Simpson, a retired educator, activist, and local historian of sorts. Simpson has always been a fountain of knowledge; when it comes to the history of all things Chester, and she didn’t disappoint at this event.
