Board of Education adopts 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 Academic Calendars

PHILADELPHIA, February 28, 2025 — At the Thursday, February 27, 2025, School District of Philadelphia Board of Education Action Meeting, the Board of Education voted to adopt the academic calendars for both the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years.

“In developing the academic calendars, our primary goal was to establish a calendar that supports student learning and meets the diverse needs of students, families, and staff–while also adhering to calendar requirements mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Collective Bargaining Units,” said Tony B. Watlington, Sr., Ed.D., Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia.

Per the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the academic calendar requires five national holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day) and a minimum of 180 student days or 990 instructional hours for elementary school pupils and 990 hours for middle and high school pupils. Per Collective Bargaining Units, anytime between July 1 and June 30 of the given year, there are 181 student learning days, 188 teacher work days, and a minimum of 28 professional development hours.

When developing the academic calendars, the District engaged a variety of stakeholders, including District parents and guardians, school leaders, teachers, staff, union leaders, religious leaders, and government officials. The District received more than 16,400 responses to the Academic Calendar Feedback survey released in September 2024 and held 20 in-person and virtual feedback sessions for more than 270 participants.
