Conquering the challenges of Math Intimidation and Inferiority (part II)
“What we do for ourselves depends on what we know about ourselves, and what we accept about ourselves.”
Dr. John Henrik Clarke
Life is Mathmatical
The earth’s rotation, populations, Black mass imprisonment, birth rates, death rates, poverty levels, heart rates, menstrual cycles, social security numbers, age, weight, height, casualties of war, age expectancy, police brutality cases, diabetic sugar levels, neurons in the brain, cholesterol levels, sunset, sunrise, ocean tides, gravitational pull of the earth, graduation rates, gun violence percentages, illiteracy rates and the percentage of exonerated brothers and sisters who were unjustly convicted by racist judges and juries, all deal with numbers.
Mathematical Genius and Master Teacher
Even learning and mastering the trade of barbering, requires an over-standing of math. Mastering the barbering tools to create angles, lines, fading, and blending certain hair textures are example of mathematics. During my 20 year tenure as a barber for my family’s 58 year old barbering and hair styling business in West Philadelphia, I had the honor of meeting and becoming the personal barber of countless powerful and influential Africans.
During that most grateful time of community service, I met one such man that proved our innate ability to conquer mathematics and to overcome our intimidation of numbers; his name was Dr. Abdulalim A. Shabazz.
Dr. Shabazz was born May22, 1927 in Bessemer, Alabama. He earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Chemistry from Lincoln University; a Master of Science in Mathematics at the Massachusetts institute of Technology in 1951; and a Ph.D in 1955 in Mathematics from Cornell University.
