Conquering the challenges of Math Intimidation and Inferiority (part1)
Whenever I purposely enter a corner store owned and operated by ethnicities other than Black, I always make sure that each African child at the counter buying candy asks for a receipt and takes their time counting the change. Other races of people who have set up a successful businesses in the Black community are well aware that most Black people do not count their change. After most business transactions, we just receive the loose change and put it right in our pockets. If cashiers are able to cheat 150 Black children and adults out of at least 25 cents per day, that theft adds up to an extra $37.50 in their pocket or purse.
Culturally, when math concepts and arithmetic are taught to our children at a very early age and reinforced throughout the village, the inferiority and intimidation of math are greatly decreased throughout the duration of that child’s life.
