Black Clergy of Philadelphia & Vicinity Set To Host Virtual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance January 16th

Reading Time: 2 minutes

PHILADELPHIA, PA—The Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity, will celebrate the legacy and memory of Dr. King one day before his national holiday, on Sunday, January 16, 2022. Rev. Dr. Robert Collier, Sr. stated, “Out of a continued effort to help keep people safe from Covid-19 and the other variants, we feel it is best to host a virtual remembrance for Dr. King this year. Our service will be on January 16th and it will start promptly at 4:00 p.m. We expect the program to run for one and a half hours and we welcome the general public to watch our service on the Black Clergy Facebook page.

The overall theme this year is, “Keeping the Dream Alive Through Civil Rights,” said Dr. R. Ellis King, chairman of the Black Clergy MLK service. Even though we are unable to have an in-person celebration for Dr. King, we still have a program that’s been planned that will remind our virtual guests of Dr. King’s mission and his passion to make the world a better place. The program has been designed so that three speakers before our keynote, will deliver remarks focused on very key subjects that certainly Dr. King was concerned about while he lived. The speakers will be Bishop J. Louis Felton, first vice president of Black Clergy and he’ll talk about the plight of African Americans in America. Dr. Wayne Weathers, our second vice president of Black Clergy will speak on the plight of African American men in America. Our third speaker, Dr. Janet Sturdivant, third vice president of Black Clergy, will address the plight of African American women in America.

The keynote will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Robert Collier, Sr. Aside from being the president of Black Clergy, he is the pastor of Galilee Baptist Church of Roxborough, in Philadelphia. Had Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived to this year, he would have been 93 years old. This year, Dr. King’s national holiday will be observed on Monday, January 17th.

The Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity was founded 40 years ago and represents 11 religious denominations. Over the years, the organization has tackled a myriad of issues plaguing the African American community, from reaching more youth and getting them connected to church and worship; HIV/AIDS; homelessness; affordable housing and gentrification; education reform; racial profiling; the criminal justice system and more.

For any media representatives who want to cover the Black Clergy’s virtual program on Sunday, the log-in information is below.
