Beyond Covid: Life After the Pandemic, with COVID lingering

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On Monday, February 26, 2024, my 101-year-old Uncle, James Butler, passed away in Florida from Covid. Uncle Jimmy made it all the way through the height of the pandemic in 2020, 2021, and 2022 without catching the virus, not once. Even when COVID-19 made its way to the senior living community where he resided in Florida, Uncle Jimmy managed to dodge the Coronavirus. But then, after all the COVID restrictions were pretty much lifted, even knowing the virus was still around, COVID made a return visit to the senior community where my beloved Uncle was living–and this time, it left its unwanted calling card with him.

After all his years of life and being a healthy man for 98% of his life, it wasn’t old age that took him out of here. It wasn’t a heart attack, a stroke, cancer, or diabetes–it was that darn Covid.

Thank goodness I don’t know of anyone else close to me who has passed in the last year or so from Covid. However, I know so many people, from week to week, who call me and say, “Girl, I just got over Covid.” Or, “Thera, I hate to tell you this, but I can’t come to that event I said I would support because, guess what, I just took a Covid test, and it came back positive.”

I have literally lost track of the number of people I know personally or who know a friend of mine, and I found out through my friend that so and so came down with Covid last week or last month. It’s crazy.
