Beware of Carjackers

Reading Time: < 1 minute

We’re not thirty days into this new year, and already, the Philadelphia Police Department is reporting an increase in carjackings from this same time, a year ago. As of January 15, 2022, there have already been ninety carjackings committed in our city. Out of that number, seven of the perpetrators have been arrested, and only four of them remain in custody. In 2021 there were 750 reported carjackings. Last year, the hotspots for carjackings were in the 24th and 25th police districts.

The Philadelphia Police Department, said Commissioner Danielle Outlaw, has a targeted plan to address these crimes. Outlaw stated, “We have both uniformed and plainclothes officers placed strategically around the city. On the investigative end, we have a task force dedicated to investigating carjackings in addition to our divisional detectives. Our Intelligence Bureau has also gathered information from multiple sources, participating in mutual exchanges of information with law enforcement partners and aiding in identifying problem areas.”
