An awful lot is going on with our schools right now because it’s “Back to school time.” Whether it’s a public school, a private school, a Catholic school, a Muslim school, a charter school, or any other kind of school that educates children from kindergarten to high school, all these places of learning are full of activity at this date in the year. Philadelphia public school children started back to school on Monday, August 29, 2022.
With this new school year comes a new public School Superintendent. All eyes will be on him as he comes to the helm of this massive public education system. His name is Tony Watlington. He walked into a heated situation here in Philly–with the major concern around the safety of all our children and for the people who work for the school district in mind. As violence continues to climb around the city, parents and other caregivers of children are worried about being safe inside school as well as going to and coming from school.
The Office of School Safety, for the School District, according to the school district website, is committed to fostering safe, secure, and supportive learning environments for Philadelphia public schools. We use research and data to make informed decisions that are centered on impartiality, restorative practices, and student equity. Our Safety Officers participate in comprehensive training programs that include: diversity and inclusion, trauma-sensitive care, adolescent development, and restorative strategies.
School district officials believe students can reach their full potential in a positive and nurturing atmosphere. The School District and Board of Education’s mission to deliver an excellent public school education for all students is its uppermost on the agenda. Parents and other concerned citizens can help keep our schools a safe place. If you see someone committing a crime during or after school, call the Philadelphia Police Department (911), or the Safety Hotline, at 215-400-SAFE (215-400-7233).
