Attorney General’s Integrity Unit urges Re-Examination of Avon Lady Murder

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a press conference held in the square across from Chester City Hall, on Thursday, February 10th, members of the Delaware County Black Caucus, criminal justice advocates, and family urged a fresh look at the murder conviction of Leroy Evans. Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland, State Representative Brian Kirkland (D-159th), and Senator Anthony Williams (D-8 Delaware/Philadelphia) were in attendance at the rally. Evans’ family is hopeful for his release after his wrongful conviction and incarceration of 40 years.

Chester Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland said, “Forty-one years is a long time, and it gets even longer when you know you did no wrong. So, we stand in solidarity for freedom for someone who is innocent…someone who did not commit a crime.”

Evans who has served 40 years of a life sentence may have the opportunity for freedom thanks to an investigation and recommendation from the Conviction Integrity Unit of the State Attorney General’s Office. Evans has consistently maintained that he didn’t commit this crime.
