Reading Time: < 1 minute

“The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nation building and reconciliation.”—Nelson Mandela

Yes, it’s that time again–for the Chester Upland School District Heritage Bowl. On Tuesday, February 7th, Chester City Hall hosted students from Main Street School, Chester Upland Stem Academy, and Stetser Elementary School–who competed for the Heritage Bowl Trophy.

The Heritage Bowl is an annual, friendly Black History competition for 5th-grade students in the Chester Upland School District (CUSD). Teams of students from each school answer questions related to various subjects related to Black History, with the school with the most–correct answers winning the competition.

The students were excited and focused, with the 2022’s defending champions, Main Street School, winning the 2023 Heritage Bowl with a total score of 30 points. Main Street retains the bragging rights for the second year in a row and got to hoist the 2023 Heritage Bowl trophy. Congratulations to Main Street School and all the participants.

Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland, Deputy Mayor Councilman William Morgan, Councilwoman Elizabeth Williams, Chester Upland School District Superintendent Dr. Craig Parkinson, along with teachers and parents, were in attendance to encourage the students. Director of Parks and Recreation Duane Lee served as Master of Ceremonies.
