This weekend, President Biden published an opinion piece in the Washington Post laying out his goals and strategy in the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Arguing that the world faces “an inflection point, “he asked the fundamental question – “What will our world look like on the other side of these conflicts?” His ends – a positive vision for the future – are, however, a stark contrast with the means, which at this point comes down to continuing the wars.
Violence, however, seldom leads to peace. Violence begets violence. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth leads all blind and toothless.
President Biden rightfully makes a distinction between the terrorists that attacked Israelis and the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. He backs Israel’s right to defend itself, arguing that the war will deny Hamas the ability to carry out terror.
But the war that Israel is waging doesn’t discriminate between terrorists and Palestinians. It began with Israel cutting off access to fuel, water, and food, triggering a humanitarian crisis. It was followed with warnings for all Palestinians in the north to evacuate immediately to the south. That was followed with the widespread bombing of buildings, schools, homes, and hospitals in the north – as well as bombing in the south. Palestinian health authorities estimate that there have been 13,000 killed, thousands of them children. Now Israel is giving notice that it plans to attack in the south. And admits that the war with Hamas fighters – many of whom are assumed to be holed up in underground tunnels – has yet to be truly joined.
