It may seem like the new catchphrase, but mental health issues are very real and always have been. Long before the global pandemic laid bare, the reality is that generations of people with mental health issues suffered in silence.
It was the dirty little dark secret, discussed in polite whispers and never in polite company. Just like the rest of society’s issues, there was that attempt to sweep the subject of mental health under the rug. Given the norms of society and the stressors the youth of this generation are encountering just trying to reach adulthood, mental health is a very serious issue, and failure to address it is and will continue to have grievous consequences for our country and the world.
On Saturday, December 9, 2023, in Chester, a free Self Awareness Symposium was held in Widener University’s Lathem Hall. The symposium was spearheaded by Jamil Cottman, an entrepreneur and community stakeholder.
In collaboration with Amachi Chester, Team S.T.R.I.V.E., and the Walnut Street Deli, the symposium focused on the mental health of Chester’s youth, highlighting the challenges that many face on the road to adulthood. Mindfulness, choices, self-esteem, and self-care were a part of the many themes of the day. Open panel discussions, look and feel-good workshops, self- care tutorials, and helpful affirmations gave attendees the tools and resources to help navigate the pathway to a healthier state of mental health. A Plan it Workshop focused on preparedness and organization using a to-do list and goal orientation.
Anitra J. Green, LCSW, CEO/Therapist (Taylormade Behavioral Health Solutions), said, “More than ever before, we need to have more conversations about mental health and combat the stigma. I commend Mr. Cottman for putting together this symposium because we can all play a part in building an emotionally healthier society. As a mental health therapist, I see myself as a leader and advocate. I also understand that being a therapist of color, which makes up only 4% of clinicians, my voice may be amplified and very impactful in addressing disparities in accessing services in communities of color.”
“We need more of these kinds of events, and I was happy to be a part of this. I learned so much from the other outstanding panelists here today. It truly takes a village, and today was a phenomenal start. Keep up the good work Amachi Chester, Team S.T.R.I.V.E., and Jamil Cottman. This is what community is all about,” said Chester Community Coalition Councilwoman-elect Tamika Gibson.
The afternoon event was complete with various other resources, prizes, and food supplied by Walnut Street Deli.
“We must be intentional with our words. They must match our actions to create confidence and a great reputation within ourselves.”
