Veterans Day is the Federal holiday in the United States that occurs each November 11th.
It’s our national observance honoring military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Likewise, when my long-term colleague Carolyn Long-Williams invited me to attend the reburial service and ceremony for her late husband, PFC Lamar Williams, at Arlington National Cemetery, the suggestion captivated me.
For years, Long-Williams and I were coworkers as special education teachers at East Camden Middle School. We never mentioned; nor conversed about the unusual circumstances that occurred in our lives.
“We were high school sweethearts,” Long-Williams stated in an interview. A veteran is a veteran no matter which branch of the Armed forces they served,” she replied.
Long-Williams’ very young husband, PFC Lamar Williams, was Killed In Action (KIA) on April 13, 1971, during the Vietnam War. Not until that Tuesday morning, August 7, 2019, did I have reason to visit that historic place.
