A Life of Faith and Legacy:Remembering Pastor Mark A. Humphries

Reading Time: 3 minutes

On July 17, 1963, a light was born to the late Carl and Edna Humphries—a light that would go on to spread the message of the gospel with unwavering passion. Mark Angelo Humphries grew up in Philadelphia, where he was educated in the public school system and dedicated his heart to God at a young age. Even as a child, Pastor Mark’s commitment to his faith was profound.

He joined Deliverance Evangelistic Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Benjamin Smith Sr., immersing himself in church life as he served in the choir, youth department, drama ministry, and street evangelism. In his early teens, he answered his call to ministry, ultimately becoming a licensed minister. Youth revivals across Philadelphia soon became his stage as he shared messages of faith and hope.

In his twenties, Pastor Mark’s journey continued at Deliverance Evangelistic Church, where he took on a youth leader role, guiding many young people in their own Christian faith journeys. His love for scripture was evident; he considered it a privilege to preach the gospel and delighted in opportunities to share God’s word. Throughout his career, he balanced ministry with professional roles at Comcast, Nabisco, and CLC Book Center–but one of his most beloved roles was co-hosting the radio show “New Beginnings” with Marilyn Ings, where he shared his message with a broader audience.

Pastor Mark was deeply committed to growing his faith and ministry skills, attending institutions including Deliverance Evangelistic Bible Institute, Eastern School of Christian Ministry, and Bethel School of Prophetic Development. His love for learning was unquenchable, with his bookshelves filled with Christian literature on church growth, administration, and worship.

In 1995, Pastor Mark became a founding member of True Light Fellowship Church when Dr. Wesley Pinnock (who served under the late Benjamin Smith Sr.) answered the call to establish the ministry. Mark served first as a youth pastor and later as associate pastor. Known for his candor and ability to connect deeply with young people, many affectionately called him “Uncle Mark” and would rely on him for advice. He also had a unique connection with the church’s Mother’s Board, often joining the mothers for fellowship and meals.

Known as a dynamic worship leader, Pastor Mark had a gift for bringing traditional Pentecostal hymns and gospel classics to life. His voice led congregations into worship, and he often returned to songs like “I Need Thee,” “War Cry,” and “Victory in Jesus,” evoking a sense of reverence and celebration.

In 2003, Pastor Mark married the love of his life Sherri Webb, and they were blessed with two children, Dena Michelle and Mark Dean. As a father and husband, he demonstrated his faith not just in words but in deeds. He embodied the love of God by sharing his strength, humor, and generosity with those around him. Friends and family knew Pastor Mark as a larger-than-life personality whose laughter, directness, and humor left an impression on everyone he met.

In 2021, Pastor Mark faced health challenges, undergoing surgery and eventually returning to the pulpit; on March 19, 2023, unbeknownst to everyone, he stepped onto the pulpit for the final time. The following day, he suffered an emergency health incident, which led to 18 months of hospital stays, rehabilitation, tests, trials, and ups and downs. Despite it all, his spirit never wavered. When asked by his wife Sherri if he felt discouraged, he’d simply respond, “No.” His faith remained his anchor up until the end.

On October 24, 2024, Pastor Mark peacefully transitioned to his heavenly reward. His memory lives on with his devoted wife Sherri, his children Dena Michelle and Mark Dean, his sister Carla Humphries-Taylor, and a loving extended family. He also leaves behind a legacy of faith cherished by his spiritual father, Dr. Wesley Pinnock, and the entire True Light Fellowship Church family.

Pastor Mark Humphries will be remembered as a man of faith and devotion who gave everything to his family, his church, and his Savior—Jesus Christ. A beloved leader, friend, and father, his light shines on through those he inspired. Mark Angelo Humphries: July 17, 1963 – October 24, 2024. Home with Jesus.
