Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Mother of The Nation (Pt1)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

When Queen Winnie Mandela becomes a household name and is discussed by Black women in hair salons, sorority meetings, during family dinners, and even long walks in the park, I believe we as a people, will see collective progress in our lives. Our Queen Mother-Winnie Mandela was a living symbol of complete Black womanhood.

In the winter of 1997, I had the distinct honor and rare privilege to actually see Queen Mandela at the historical, Million Woman March held right here in the City of Philadelphia. The epic event was called and spearheaded by one of my elders and mentors, Empress Philae Chionesu. The core of the Black women who helped to structure and orchestrate this world event will forever be remembered.

Although the event was convened for the unity and organization of African women, I like many other conscious Black men, made a choice to actually witness the sacred gathering of over 2 million Black sisters during this event of biblical proportions.

As I distributed propaganda of community programs that my organization (UFS) offered to our people, I witnessed a black limousine slowly drive near the huge stage that was set up on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. After several personal security guards stepped out of the car, Queen Winnie–rose out and raised her right clenched fist high and strong, Amandla! Amandla! The crowd gave out a tremendous and extremely loud cheer!

As I gazed upon her on stage before her thunderous and inspirational delivery, I knew I was witnessing history. I knew that this day would be singed into my memory forever and that I was indeed most humbled and grateful to be in attendance.
