Phila MLK Association preparing for 37th Annual Bell Ringing at Liberty Bell and 40th Annual Awards Luncheon at The Sheraton in Honor of Dr. King

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Association for Nonviolence, Inc, will be back in full effect on this National Holiday in observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This will be the first time since the pandemic that the Philadelphia King Association has been able to present its annual awards banquet in the fashion to which they’ve become accustomed over the years. Even during the pandemic, leaders of the nonprofit started under the direction of the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King, the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., still managed to carry out the annual symbolic tapping of the Liberty Bell at the stroke of 12 noon; as for the luncheon, it’s been on hold until now.

Joye Nottage, the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Association for Nonviolence, announced, “We are so pleased to be able to bring our celebration of Dr. King back up to the level that we feel is deserving of him. That means at exactly 12 noon, we’ll have the symbolic tapping of the Liberty Bell inside the Liberty Bell Center at 5th and Market Streets. The actual ceremony will start at 11:15 a.m. Area elected officials will be on hand to offer brief remarks. This event is by special invitation only as per the direction of the Park Rangers who work to keep the Liberty Bell Center safe. Covid protocols are still in place, and all guests and media who are invited are expected to wear face masks. Immediately following the Bell Ringing ceremony, the 40th Annual Awards and Benefit Luncheon will commence at the Sheraton Downtown Philadelphia Hotel at 201 N. 17th Street in Philadelphia.”
