CIVICS 101

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As far as I can tell, based on the times we are living through, Civics is more important now than ever. But who understands what Civics is? A lot of us do. However, I dare to think that if a poll were taken, a man on the street kind of thing, which I think I’ll do in the near future, many people might start to stutter and look at you as crazy as they search for the correct answer. Without Googling the answer or asking anyone else in the room what is Civics and why it’s important; here’s what I would say:

Civics is important because it’s a major part of the American way of life. Civics is about being a good citizen, being a good neighbor, and being an American. As a child in this country, once you are school-age, you start to learn about the history of America. As a citizen living in whatever nation you live in, you should know the basic history of that nation. That’s why our children start to learn about American history at a young age.

Side-bar: As African Americans, good parents (who are woke) will understand that we still need to teach our children Black history at home because American history books tend to cater to the Christopher Columbus “his story” and things of that nature. The reality is that Chris did not discover America. Be mindful African American parents, that you really need to teach Black history at home. Schools nowadays supposedly have some Black History classes, but, by and large, I think they’re very lacking in most cases.
