The City of Chester has reached a point where there are no more individual doctors operating private practices in the city. It’s definitely a sign of the times, made more glaring in a small city like Chester, with a distressed and aging population desperately in need of care.
On Wednesday, September 28th, Chester City Council presented Dr. Carl L. Pierce, Jr., MD, with a citation in commemoration of his 33 years of dedicated service to the city and its residents. Pierce is a product of Chester and a graduate of Chester High School.
After High School, Pierce attended Cheyney State University, receiving a B.A. Degree in Biology. He pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, graduating from Medical School in May, 1982.
Pierce’s lifelong dream was to practice in Chester. Sacred Heart Hospital/Community Hospital (which no longer exist) was looking for doctors that they could help to start up in the city. At the time, I was completing a public health obligation in Michigan; a friend, Dr. Christopher Hannum, already practicing in Chester, informed me of the opportunity, and I wanted to take advantage of it. “I wanted to come back this way. I was raised here, my family was here, and it was a dream of mine. Once I got started and was able to establish myself, the years kind of went by on me. I don’t even know where 33 years went,” says Pierce. Dr. Hannum and Pierce did their residency together at Presbyterian Hospital and their years of friendship created a path for him to come home to Chester to practice.
