Reading Time: 2 minutes

Philadelphia NAACP Youth Council, Ruffin Vision Network, and the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office hosted a movie screening of “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, at the Studio Movie Grill in Upper Darby. The event honored Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal and several other influential women of color who lead their communities and respective areas in excellence.

So often, women pour into the community with little recognition. The Women Who Lead in Excellence Awards was dedicated to celebrating excellent women and spreading the word about the work of the organizations they lead.

The stage was set as guests gathered in their beautiful African Garb for the pre-movie awards ceremony hosted by Jamir Coker, President of the NAACP Youth Council, and Vernon Keith Ruffin, Jr., President of Ruffin Vision and Stand Up at The Movies.

Honorees included the honorable Rochelle Bilal, who received the Woman King Women Who Leads Award. Deputy Police Commissioner Robin Wimberly, Erika McLeod, Jocelyn Johnson, Jiana Murdic, Dr. Marquita Williams, Barbara Chavous Pennock, Robin Shine Maddox, Andrea Darden, Patricia Candell, Sandra Haughton, Tasha Thorpe, Ijeoma Oparanozie, Maria Q Sanchez, Keir Bradford-Grey, Movita Harrell Johnson, Maria Q Sanchez, Tracey Gordon, Crystal Coleman, and Angie Wilson Vincent.

After the awards ceremony, guests were treated to popcorn, soda, and a viewing of the most anticipated movie, “The Woman King.”

From cheers to tears, “The Woman King” is a phenomenal film. The film, starring Oscar-winner Viola Davis, is not just a movie but a triumphant victory for women everywhere.

“The Woman King,” Inspired by actual events, is the impactful story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. “The Woman King” follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Viola Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.
